Hidden Treasures in the Book of Job (Reasons to Believe): How the Oldest Book in the Bible Answers Today's Scientific Questions Kindle Edition

4.6 out of 5 stars 855 ratings

Arguably the oldest book in the Bible, the book of Job has a surprising amount to say about some of the newest scientific discoveries and controversies. Far from a book that is just about suffering, Job is filled with rich insight into both ancient and modern questions about

the formation of the world
the difference between animals and humans
cosmology
dinosaurs and the fossil record
how to care for creation
and more

With careful consideration and exegesis, internationally known astrophysicist and Christian apologist Hugh Ross adds yet another compelling argument to the case for the veracity of the biblical commentary on the history of the universe, Earth, life, and humanity.
Hidden Treasures in the Book of Job shows that the Bible is an accurate predictor of scientific discoveries and a trustworthy source of scientific information, and that both the book of Scripture and the book of nature are consistent both internally and externally.

Eric Metaxas, New York Times bestselling author of Bonhoeffer: Pastor, Martyr, Prophet, Spy and Amazing Grace: William Wilberforce and the Heroic Campaign to End Slavery

"This is a brilliant, insightful, and provocative book, filled with nuggets from digging deeply into the hidden treasures of the book of Job."--
Norman L. Geisler, Distinguished Professor of Apologetics and Theology, Veritas Evangelical Seminary

"Surprising and accurate scientific insights few consider. Hugh Ross brilliantly analyzes these details with great scrutiny to highlight the fact that Scripture presents compelling information regarding our greatest scientific complexities. I highly recommend this work for those considering the evidence of the Bible's scientific claims."--
John Ankerberg, founder and president of The John Ankerberg Show

"This book is an elegant explanation of how Scripture, the scientific facts of nature, and the tragedy of human suffering all point people to God. It's sophisticated and simple and arguably groundbreaking. I can't wait to use it in the classroom."--
Sarah Sumner, dean, A. W. Tozer Theological Seminary

"A treasure in and of itself. It is enormously engaging in both its content and its style. It is one of the most up-to-date scientific, as well as biblical, responses in the evolution, creation, young earth debate, yet all offered with clear facts, gentleness of tone, and convincing logic."--
Walter C. Kaiser Jr., president emeritus, Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary

The book of Job is so important to me, I have definitely read it many times. As I am 35 years young and have lost both patents. Actually made it through more than that, I'm not even going to start. But reading Job gave me so much faith. The thing is this isn't my destination and I'm actually grateful I understand pain, I don't want anymore. But Job never gave up he pushed forth every day. In pain, stickiness, sarrow, he gave it to someone higher Believed in a savior! My Jesus! So I press on.

Dr. Ross does it again. This book makes the point that the story of God's creation was thought out by an entity far beyond any human mind--an omnipotent mind. He makes the point that Job, the oldest book in Scripture, actually tells the details of God's creation far better than even Genesis. All Christians, and all of those searching for real answers, should read and study this marvelous book.

i like all well-done apologetic books - and this is really good. from the most ancient book scientist Hugh Ross provides some exciting ideas that point to God's existence.
Job 38:1-7 Then the LORD answered Job out of the whirlwind, and said:
2 "Who is this who darkens counsel
    By words without knowledge?

    3 Now prepare yourself like a man;
I will question you, and you shall answer Me.

4 " Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth?
Tell Me, if you have understanding.

    5 Who determined its measurements?
    Surely you know!
Or who stretched the line upon it?

6 To what were its foundations fastened?
    Or who laid its cornerstone,

7 When the morning stars sang together,
And all the sons of God shouted for joy?
such poetic truth, such stirring heights are then reached as Ross provides the reader with fresh and convincing insights. Truth is God's Word, including the oldest book: Job. This is Ross' best.
The Creator and the Cosmos: How the Greatest Scientific Discoveries of the Century Reveal God
or Truth, Knowledge and the Reason for God: The Defense of the Rational Assurance of Christianity
It's great to be alive when so many apologetic books offer compelling and fresh arguments.

Some people may take umbrage to my views on this book, and that is their right, but I certainly don't want to argue with other Believers about it.

As a Christian, I always sort of saw the first chapter of Genesis as likely not to be interpreted literally. Rather, I viewed it as basically telling us that God is the creator of eveything. Nor did it ever threaten the authority of the Bible in my mind to view the creation days as not being literal 24 days. I know many Belivers strongly take issue with that.

Ross gets into how the book of Job essentially helps interpret Genesis. His theories and insights make a lot of sense and lend great credibility to the actual Biblical narrative.

However, I would have liked to have seen even more facts and a bit less philosophical oratory. So, while I think the book is good, and in parts really good, it is also a boring read at points. Some parts of it are real long ball home runs however.

Most studies of Job focus on the suffering and faith of Job. Indeed, it is the place in the Bible to study these topics. But Job is often overlooked for its apologetics value and how it informs the rest of the Bible. Most start their studies of creation of Genesis, but Job is older and has more details about the creation than Genesis. Even most self-proclaimed Bible experts don't seem to know this. Ross is one of the leading apologists today. If you have read some of his other groundbreaking books (The Genesis Question: Scientific Advances and the Accuracy of Genesis, Why the Universe Is the Way It Is, More Than a Theory: Revealing a Testable Model for Creation, etc) then you know his committment to the Bible's accuracy and authencity and how science supports this. Some of that material is this book as well, but viewed in the light of Job. Christians and skeptics alike will find many answers here to questions they may think unanswerable. People brainwashed by the distortions of young-earth creationists will be be left wondering if the YECs have ever bothered to read anything Ross has ever printed. While mainly on science topics, Ross touches on some of the other issues of Job as well. He only falls down when he claims that man's part in global warming is undeniable. Many scientists don't think man has any part in climate change, especially after Climategate and the revelation of the endangered polar bear fraud (more: The Politically Incorrect Guide to Global Warming (and Environmentalism), The Great Global Warming Blunder: How Mother Nature Fooled the World's Top Climate Scientists). Still, Ross showed the reality of design before anyone else knew what that meant and continues to provide answers to the skeptics "toughest" questions.

Great commentary. Had read Job a number of time, each meant more.

Hugh really points out things that needed reinforcement. Got this book cause another study pointed out how the book of Job covers science extremely well. And so much more

The biblical book of Job clears up the difficult creation question accounts in Genesis 1. Job being the oldest book and predating Genesis does away with the exegetical arguments put forth by the biblical naysayers and young creation proponents and backs up and totally clarifies the creation account. The two books of doctrine, "the book of nature and the book of the bible are shown by Dr. Ross as being in complete agreement! A must read for any human who has questions about the origin of the universe and our planet earth and what sustains them. Read all of his books!

Ross not only shows how the book of Job helps us understand the creation account in Genesis but also offers a superb overview of the whole book and the good news it contains. He gives a solid perspective on suffering and how it might fit into the plans of an all-powerful creator. Highly recommended.

This book looked interesting because I was part of a study group looking at Job as wisdom literature. It was not what I expected - a look through the book of Job in some detail - but it was interesting nevertheless. I especially liked Hugh Ross's reports of his encounters with skeptics and atheists. He goes to conferences of skeptics to present reasons for belief in a creative, caring God and he shares how some people respond to his presentations. He also deals with the parts of the book of Job that talk about creation and how those portions fit with other Biblical accounts of creation.
