Walking from East to West: God in the Shadows Kindle Edition

4.8 out of 5 stars 1,620 ratings

The heartfelt memoir of Ravi Zacharias. Follow along with his journey to discover that God is the author of our destinies, no matter how dark the shadows that hide the light.

Ravi Zacharias lived an extraordinary life. In this touching memoir, Zacharias shares an intimate look into his formative years, inviting you to follow him all the way back to his roots and journey with him through his life: to see and smell the neighborhood in India where he grew up, to feel a mother's love and the consternation of a harsh father, and the lure of friends and sports.

He also tells about his long search for truth in wrestling with Eastern thought and the newer ideas of Christianity, the cry for help in a dark moment when he tried to take his own life--and the dramatic turning point that led to a life lived for Christ. Zacharias recalls his early days as a new convert, what it was like to find a new life in the Western world, and the eventual birth and growth of a worldwide ministry.

He has traveled from the East to the West, and then back again to answer skeptics' penetrating questions about the meaning of life and the existence of a God who is there for his children.

This is a story about an amazing man. Yet it is also everyone's story about belief--how it begins, how it grows, and the struggles associated with it.

Editorial Reviews

Review

'A frank, endearing story of a respected apologist and evangelical statesman's life....[It] starkly contrasts the real implications of rejecting or accepting the lordship of Jesus. Nothing short of meaning in life is at stake, and Walking from East to West exposes the silliness of much popular religious pluralism by underscoring the gravity of worldview selection....This is storytelling in the fashion of C. S. Lewis: rational argumentation expressed in narrative.' -- Christianity Today

From the Back Cover

“Outside were stray animals and people, each about some pursuit. Sometimes it was a beggar at the door, sometimes a leprous hand reaching for a handout with a plea for compassion. Life with all its hurts and pains squinted at you, squatted before you, and stared you down daily. This was the street where I grew up.” Ravi Zacharias has lived an extraordinary life. He has walked with great leaders, slept in the villages and homes of the poor, and crossed continents to bring the good news of the gospel to the world. Already a man of two worlds by the time he was twenty, Ravi never dreamed that God would lead him from his birth home in India to Canada and the United States, and eventually to a platform on the world stage. For thirty-three years he has spoken all over the world. He has addressed writers of the peace accord in South Africa, the president’s cabinet and parliament in Peru, and military officers at the Lenin Military Academy and the Center for Geopolitical Strategy in Moscow. He has given the keynote address at the National Day of Prayer in Washington, DC, and has spoken twice at the Annual Prayer Breakfast at the United Nations in New York. Walking from East to West is Ravi’s life story, a deeply personal journey into his past. Dr. Zacharias invites you back to the southern India of his early childhood, and into his troubled youth in the sophisticated capital city of Delhi. He recalls the importance of a mother’s love and his difficult relationship with his father. He tells about his long search for truth in wrestling with Eastern thought and the newer ideas of Christianity, the cry for help in a dark moment when he tried to take his own life—and the dramatic turning point that led to a life lived for Christ. Zacharias recalls his early days as a new convert, what it was like to find a new life in the Western world, and the eventual birth and growth of a worldwide ministry. This is a story about an amazing man. Yet it is also everyone’s story about belief—how it begins, how it grows, and the struggles associated with it. Walking from East to West is a heartfelt personal story of one man’s discovery that God is the author of our destinies, no matter how dark the shadows that hide the light.

Maybe it was because I was going through, at the time I read the book, a lot of struggles and I was seeking (and finding) answers.

Ravi Zacharias, if my memory is not deluding me, is the first preacher that I listened to after I started attending church and accepted Christianity as true. I was surprised then to know that Christianity and faith in general could be defended rationally and found this man to be unique in speech and approach (and voice!). And from that time on, till now, I have been listening to his sermons and reading his books and articles.

I took up this book on an impulse and I believe it was God ordained that I do so. I finished reading the book within a couple of days, devouring every paragraph. I suggest this book to all those who are followers of Christ and all who believe that they have been called for more than church attendance.

At the time I was reading the book, I was a student at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign College of Law. It had been only five months since I had come to the United States, for the first time, from Kerala, India. And I could draw a lot of parallels with Ravi's life in India and the concerns that he had faced the first time he was in a foreign land and surely with his struggles as a student, a son and a youngster.

In this book, the reader will find a simple recitation of a man's life, his struggles, his faith and his work for God. Those who are familiar with Ravi's sermons and books will be astonished to find the book written in a simple manner, devoid of his usual verbal richness. This book is as raw as it can be; it's a man speaking explicitly to your heart.

In Walking from East to West, Ravi Zacharias retells his life's story or rather, God's story in his life that will help you not only bridge but cross the cultural gap between the East and the West. In this book Ravi remembers every single person he has encountered and have made an impact over his life.

Reading this book has made me grow closer to Jesus Christ.

Besides my Bible I love to read Christian biographies and have read dozens through the years. I so enjoy and am challenged by Ravi's lessons on youtube that I decided to read his biography. I was concerned that the language of the book would be too scholarly for me to really enjoy, but I am thankful to say that I was wrong. This biography is dynamic, easy to read, fast paced, and an adventure. I laughed, I cried, I prayed, I thought, and I was challenged in my own Spiritual walk with God. I couldn't put it down! A friend of mine and myself are studying a book about experiencing God in our daily lives; experiencing a love relationship with Jesus. Ravi's life is a demonstration of all that we are studying. God is amazing and practical in His teaching of His children if we will only listen. Read the story of Ravi's life and see how wonderful the Lord is. See how He works in our lives even when we are not aware of Him doing so; Ravi calls that "God in the Shadows". I intend to buy this book for others so they will see how God initiates and how He gifts His children for work in HIs kingdom; all by His grace and no reasons for self glory. You will see that behind the great intelligence is a humble servant of God who is willing to go anywhere for the cause of the Truth. One thing I have found in all the biographies which I have read of great Christian servants- they are devout workers! They sacrifice time, careers, money, comforts, and precious time with loved ones, endure threats against their lives, walk into danger, confront the lost, all for the glory of God and the salvation of others. Once you read this be sure to pray for Ravi and other servants who labor as the tip of the sword of truth. Let me encourage you to read other Christian biographies. You will learn that the book of Acts is still being written, and that God is still working to build His kingdom as He did in the New Testament.

Ravi Zacharias truly is a man sent by God to bridge the gaps between East and West. As I read his fantastic story, I was amazed at how much of his story encouraged me in my own Christian walk. He went from being a teen who didn't like to read to being one of the most read apologist in the world.

As I continued to read his story, I was amazed at how much he does and how much of his family life was sacrificed by preaching God's word. The Lord gave him an understanding wife and beautiful children who understand his calling.

When he mentioned how over the years, he had lost his sense of humor because of the serious of apologetics, I felt sad for him. Preaching the Gospel is serious business and it is just that important but I believe God has blessed him richly.

The personal accounts of his friends who have paid for their beliefs with their lives were so inspiring and made me extremely reflective on my own Christian walk? Would I be willing to face all kinds of danger for Christ? I hope I never have to find out.

The book especially gives the reader a view of Eastern mentality and life. It was so vibrant and full of some many images and sounds. For the Western Christian, it is very important to understand the Easter mindset if we are to evangelize to our Eastern brothers.

I wish I could just shake Mr. Zacharias hand and just sit in his presence for an hour. I thank God for him and hope that he continues the good work.

I chose to read this book becausevi have listened to many if Ravi's sermons and admire his abilith to cut through unbelief and reveal the truth in a powerful way. I appreciate how Ravu was willing to share so openly about his early struggles. What a testament to how God's protection is in every aspect of our lives, how he orchestrates his plan for our lives and what he can accomplish through us if we we are willing to step out and take risks. This is one of the best biographies written about a life committed to the Lord no matter what was asked of him. Truly an inspiring book.

Ravi when I heard you preaching on UCB radio in the uk, you spoke in brief of your suicide pack, I myself was in that state of mind after sustaining severe injuries after a RTA ( which is no fault of mine) the Lord appeared to me and reminded me how many people I will hurt if I took my life, this burning issue of your book kept coming into my mind, and I took the step of faith to have it on my I-pad the kindle edition, I am so touched and inspired, as I am from Sri Lanka lived in the uk for now 30 years, life in my country is very similar to the life in India. I thank the Lord for blessing me with parents who gave the foundation of faith and prayer that move mountains.
Ravi your book is so touching and food for a hungry soul quench the thirst and hungry soul.
Thank you and Gods blessings Rachel
